30 Day Music Challenge Day 3: Summertime (The Sundays)

In an effort to drum up some posting after leaving this blog essentially dormant for, well, too long… here’s me taking the 30 Day Music Challenge. It’s spreading well enough that it’s still interesting, and it’s relevant enough to my interests that it’s worth pursuing. I love music, and I’ve come to associate certain songs with certain parts of my life, and it’s a fun opportunity to talk about some well-remembered songs.

Day 3 is “a song that reminds you of summertime”. There’s a ton of songs that do that for me, most of which were seeing heavy airplay during high school summers and college summers and whatnot.

Summertime by The Sundays (you’ll see them again before the 30 days are up) is neither, come to think of it! I got introduced to the band when I heard a subsequent single (released after this song) on good old NU107, and I scrambled to track down other songs of theirs. This was, what, 1997, so this was harder than it sounds. I remember tracking down the album (Static and Silence), and eventually an Asian exclusive release with three bonus tracks, then introducing this group to everyone who would listen (hi Joie, the “romantic Piscean” who picked up on the amusing “Chinese-looking girlfriend” lyric).

I think this was released late in the year, Novemberish? Nevertheless, the subject of the song is as the title suggests, and it’s so aggressively upbeat and positive that I couldn’t help but list it for this category.

Vocalist Harriet Wheeler sounds the same live as she does on the album, which is unexpectedly tough for some artists. Has the look of a softer Jane Leeves — very mind’s-eye, about what you’d expect from her voice (which is, I maintain, one of the nicest-sounding vocals anywhere).
